As a middle child, Art has been mediating disputes his entire life.
Raised in upstate New York, Art attended Colgate University where he studied philosophy with a focus on ethics. He attended The George Washington University Law School, where he was a Dean’s Fellow and Honors graduate.
Prior to shifting his professional focus to mediating full time, Art spent 30 years in private practice as an employment litigator and advisor at Littler Mendelson P.C., including 23 years as a partner. He brings this substantive employment law expertise to his mediation practice – he has essentially seen it all. This depth of experience enables Art to deftly identify and focus on the critical issues in employment mediations with a keen understanding of the interpersonal relationships underlying most employment law disputes.
Art began mediating in 2014. Since 2019, Art has also served as a court-appointed mediator for the United States District Court, Northern District. He also serves as a court-appointed mediator for the United States District Court, Central and Eastern Districts, and the Los Angeles Superior Court. From 2022 through 2024, Art also served as a volunteer mediator for the California Civil Rights Department (formerly, DFEH). Art is a member of The Mediation Society, a professional organization of experienced mediators.
Art has well over 125 hours of formal training as a mediator, including intensive training from the prestigious Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at the Pepperdine Caruso School of Law and from the United States District Court, Northern District.
In addition to his professional career, Art has volunteered for more than 20 years as a Board Member of Toolworks, a not-for-profit human service agency dedicated to improving the lives and serving the needs of the disabled community. Art believes deeply in individual dignity and self-determination, and brings these convictions to bear in mediation.
In his spare time, Art enjoys exploring the Bay Area and beyond with his family, and can often be found hiking with his rescue dog, Ellie. From time to time, Ellie likes to make appearances at virtual mediations.
